The HSK score report: what it shows and how it reaches you

Sources checked

An HSK score report lists your scores. The number of scores depends on the level. A Level 1 report gives three scores. A Level 4 report gives four. A Level 7-9 report gives five scores and a level result. Test centres in other parts of China receive the report from headquarters within 5 working days after scores are released. Centres in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan or overseas receive it about 45 days after the exam, and you collect it from that centre.

What the report shows

This article uses Level 1 and Level 4 as examples. Check the official page for any other level.

Level 1 page: the score report gives three scores: listening, reading and total score. A full score is 200 points. A cumulative score of 120 or above is a passing mark.

Level 4 page: the score report gives four scores: Listening, Reading, Writing and Total. A full score is 300 points. A cumulative score of 180 or above is a passing mark.

Levels 7-9 page: the report gives five scores (listening, reading, writing, translation and speaking) and a rating result. The rating result places the candidate in one of four levels: "Below HSK (Level 7)", "HSK (Level 7)", "HSK (Level 8)" or "HSK (Level 9)". The page says these levels are based on ability values measured with Item Response Theory (IRT), and on the content and difficulty of the test items. Each skill has a report score from 0 to 100. The score passage on the Levels 7-9 page names no pass mark. The same page says the test is currently available only as an internet-based test.

How the report reaches you

The Score Reports section of the regulation page splits test centres into two groups.

For test centres in other parts of China (excluding the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions):

  1. Headquarters sends the score report within 5 working days after score release.
  2. It goes to the mailing address you gave during registration.
  3. Keep your contact information valid.
  4. If the courier cannot reach you, the page says the score report will be destroyed, and you bear all resulting losses.

For test centres in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan or overseas:

  1. The score report goes to your local test centre about 45 days after the exam.
  2. You must contact the test centre to collect it.

The Result Inquiry section gives the release times. Paper-based written and oral exams are released one month after the exam. Computer-based online written exams are released 15 days after the exam. Computer-based online oral exams are released 20 days after the exam. Holidays postpone these dates. The page also says you must complete the test normally to access your result and receive your score report. If results are not released by the date in the annual test schedule, contact the test centre. The test centre reports the issue to CTI within three days of the scheduled release date.

The Score Reports section does not say how to get a replacement copy of a lost report. Ask your test centre.

How long a score report is valid

The Level 1 page says HSK scores are valid for two years, starting from the exam date. The Level 4 page gives the same two-year validity, starting from the exam date. The regulation page says score reports are valid for two years as proof of a candidate's language proficiency. That passage does not give a start date. The score passage on the Levels 7-9 page does not mention validity.
