HSK Exam Guide Paper-based or computer-based HSK: what differs in deadlines, tools and results
The paper-based (PBT) and computer-based (iBT at-center) HSK differ in four things the official pages state: the registration deadline, what you bring on test day, how answers are recorded, and when results come out. HSK 7-9 is only available in internet-based test.
Registration deadlines
The calendar lists 11 test-date rows for 2026. One upcoming row is shown below.
| Test date | Paper-based deadline | Computer-based at-center deadline |
|---|---|---|
| 13th December (Sun) | 16th November | 3rd December |
For this row, the paper-based deadline is 16th November and the computer-based at-center deadline is 3rd December. Other rows have their own deadlines in the calendar. See the registration page for the full list.
Test-day tools and answer recording
On test day, item 3 of the test rules lists the items that differ by form. Candidates taking the paper-based test must bring 2B pencils (two or more) and an eraser. Candidates taking the computer-based test are not permitted to bring paper or pencils.
How answers are recorded also differs. For paper-based exams, candidates fill in and mark the answer sheet as required by the invigilator. They may only use A4 scratch paper provided by the test center. No personal scratch paper is allowed. The scratch paper must be handed back after the exam.
For computer-based online exams, candidates log in with the admission ticket number and password and test the equipment. The exam is timed automatically by the computer. A draft area is provided for some questions in the computer-based online exam system. Candidates are not allowed to use stationery.
When results come out
Scores for paper-based written and oral exams will be released one month after the exam. Scores for computer-based online written exams will be released 15 days after the exam. Scores for computer-based online oral exams will be released 20 days after the exam. The above release dates will be postponed for holidays.
The calendar gives the exact result date for each row. If results are not released by the specified date, contact the test center. See the scores page for result inquiry details.
