When an HSK score is withheld for investigation: triggers, timeline and results

Sources checked

An HSK score may be withheld or withdrawn when Chinese Testing International (CTI) starts an investigation into an abnormal testing situation. During the investigation period, the release of the relevant candidate's scores is suspended, and any scores already published are temporarily withdrawn.

Circumstances that trigger an investigation

CTI will initiate investigation procedures regarding certain abnormal testing situations. Three circumstances are listed.

  • Score Anomalies: A significant mismatch between the candidate's language proficiency and the score obtained.
  • Test Venue Anomalies: Instances involving reported cheating or leakage of exam materials at the test venue, or when the venue is selected for random inspection.
  • Technical Verification: Random checks of candidates' scores will be conducted periodically.

The review process and timeline

CTI will re-review the candidate's answer sheets, speaking recordings, or writing samples, etc. Simultaneously, surveillance footage and test records will be investigated, with verification carried out in coordination with test center staff.

The review process typically takes 2 to 8 weeks and may be extended in complex cases. Candidates will be unable to check their scores during this period.

Possible results

The investigation can end in one of four ways.

Result What happens
Valid Results If no irregularities are found, scores will be released as scheduled.
Score Cancellation or Test Ban Upon confirmation of a violation, disciplinary measures shall be applied in accordance with the Measures for Handling Violations in Chinese Proficiency Tests.
Ongoing Investigation In complex situations, scores may be withheld for further verification.
Retesting Under special circumstances, candidates may be required to retake the test within a specified time frame (generally within one month after the score release). If the results of the two tests fail the consistency verification, the scores will not be published.

Questions people ask

Can I check my HSK score while it is under investigation?

No. Candidates will be unable to check their scores during the investigation period.

What should I do if my HSK results are late?

If results are not released by the specified date, contact the test center immediately. The test center would report the issue to CTI within three days of the scheduled result release date (paper-based tests may experience delays due to the shipping process).
