HSK for work: what the test body says, and why no level is fixed

Sources checked

The test body fixes no HSK level for work in China. The "Why choose HSK?" section on the HSK page names no level for any job or permit. Ask the employer or the authority concerned which level they require.

What the HSK page says about work

For foreigners looking to work in China, "a high HSK score can help demonstrate that proficiency to employers and government officials."

The "Why choose HSK?" section lists these uses of HSK scores: - "College enrollment, level learning, course exemption, and course credits." - "Employee recruiting, training, and advancement." - "Evaluation of quality of teaching at colleges, schools, and other educational institutions." - "Heighten Chinese language learners' self-evaluation."

Who HSK 7-9 is for

The HSK (Levels 7-9) page says these levels are "advanced proficiency levels intended for learners of Chinese as a second language." It names professionals among the intended takers: "international students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees in China, students majoring in Chinese in different countries, as well as professionals involved in academic research, economic, cultural, and technological exchanges conducted in Chinese."

Why the test body names no level for jobs

The "Why choose HSK?" section names no level for any job or permit. It says an HSK score can help show proficiency to employers, but it does not set a required level for work. To find the level an employer or an authority requires, ask that employer or the authority concerned.
